PostNL reopens shipping services to the United States after temporary suspension

Shipping available again from September 19

The Hague, September 19, 2025 – As of today, it is again possible to send parcels to the United States. This service was temporarily suspended on August 23 after the United States (US) decided to abolish the exemption from import duties for shipments valued up to $800 (the de minimis exemption) as of August 29. Since then, according to the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the number of shipments to the US has fallen by more than 80%. PostNL is one of the first companies in Europe to reopen the possibility of sending parcels to the US.

Solution for the vast majority of shipments

From now on, it is again possible to send business and return shipments with PostNL to the US. Our customers have been informed about the reopening. For consumers, it is possible to send gift shipments up to a value of $100 to the US, as these parcels remain exempt from import duties. This means that, as of today, there is a solution for the vast majority of shipments to the US.

PostNL will continue to ship via regular (postal) channels and to cooperate with the United States Postal Service (USPS). “International challenges demand great agility. I am delighted that today we send the first parcels to America on behalf of our customers. Our customers have been informed about the new method of shipping, which makes it possible to send parcels to the United States with PostNL,” says Tijs Reumerman, Director of Cross Border Solutions at PostNL.

In order to ship to the United States under the new regulations, more information regarding the shipment is required. In addition, import duties must be paid before arrival in the US. To make it easier for businesses to continue shipping to the United States, PostNL takes care of the import declaration and advances the import duties to the US customs authorities. A solution for the remaining consumer shipments exceeding $100 is currently being worked on.
