The Utrechtse Heuvelrug is the most popular cycling region in the Netherlands, followed by the Veluwezoom and South Limburg. This is evident from an analysis of the PostNL Postcode Challenge, in which thousands of cyclists check off postcodes in the Netherlands and Belgium. Looking at the number of unique users, postcode 3931 (Woudenberg) comes out on top. Amerongen (3958) takes second place, and nearby Leersum (3956) completes the top three. All are postcodes near the well-known climb in the region: the Amerongse berg.
The PostNL Postcode Challenge originated from the idea of passionate cycling enthusiasts and was proposed as a challenge by the podcast De Tweewielers. PostNL, partner of cycling team Team Picnic PostNL, accepted the challenge and made it possible last year by launching the PostNL Postcode Challenge. Recently, the first cycling enthusiast completed the full challenge. In 2025, participants were most active in the month of June. It is also notable that forested, hilly postcode areas dominate the top 20 statistics.
No fewer than 13 of the top 20 postcodes are located in or directly around the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, with places such as Woudenberg (3931), Amerongen / Overberg / Leersum (3956, 3958, 3959, 3953), Driebergen / Doorn (3971, 3941), Rhenen (3911) and Austerlitz / Zeist (3711, 3707). This makes the Utrechtse Heuvelrug the most popular sports area among users of the PostNL Postcode Challenge.
The Veluwezoom is also strongly represented with postcodes such as 6816 (Arnhem), 6961 (Eerbeek) and 6891 (Rozendaal). All postcode areas bordering the National Park Veluwezoom. South Limburg also scores high with the climbing hotspots of the Netherlands, Valkenburg (6301) and Gulpen (6271).
Participants can easily link their Strava account to postcodechallenge.postnl.nl. This allows them to see which postcodes they have already visited and which ‘white spots’ are still waiting for a detour. There is also a ‘wrapped’ available in which personal cycling highlights from 2025 can be viewed.PostNL Postcode Challenge: DUtrechtse Heuvelrug most popular among cyclists in 2025
