Green Postal Day: PostNL committed to even greater sustainability through international collaboration

The Hague, the Netherlands, 16 September 2022 – Today, on the fourth Green Postal Day, 18 postal companies across the world are focusing on a more sustainable economy and society. In the past year PostNL and the other postal companies have been continuing their efforts to further reduce carbon emissions. PostNL aims to deliver all parcels and letters in the Benelux region emission-free in the last mile by 2030.

For years, PostNL and postal companies worldwide have been committed to making delivery and other parts of the chain more sustainable. Since 2008, the international postal sector has blazed a trail as one of the first industries to launch a sector-wide programme to measure and reduce carbon emissions through the Environmental Measurement and Monitoring System (EMMS). Using the Sustainability Monitoring and Management System (SMMS) of International Post Corporation (IPC), PostNL has committed to halving their shared annual overall carbon emissions by 2030.

Driving sustainability

PostNL delivers anything that fits through a letterbox to 96% of Dutch home addresses emission-free: by bike or on foot, as much as possible.

As for parcels: in 2021 PostNL delivered more than 80 million of these emission-free. To be able to do this, 46% of the vehicles it uses are electric or run on renewable fuels such as HVO100 and Bio-LNG. The share of renewable fuels grew to 35% in 2021, up from 8% in 2020. Because PostNL was one of the first companies in the Netherlands to start using HVO100 on a large scale, this cleaner fuel can now be accessed more easily in many places around the country – enabling more carriers to switch to it.
